Journey lead singer12/13/2023 ![]() At some point, none of these bands will have any members left out there performing. Lets face it, none of these bands are getting any younger, nor are we. They put on a great show, sound great and whether they are a cover band of the original can be debated, but they do justice to the legacy of the songs of the band. I have seen Foreigner in its current version, which does not include Lou Graham, sometimes includes Mick Jones. I have not seen Journey in its current version, but I hear positive things from those who have. Most of my fave 80s bands have a different band member somewhere in there. I think the lead singer is the most important factor in the sound of the songs. Very few of my favorite 80s bands maintain an original lineup. I have always had mixed feelings on bands without original members, or a replacement singer or guitarist, etc. If you get confused, just listen to the music play. Up and commers like Pigeons, Twiddle, Goose and so on are propelling the scene forward. Phish now has ~30 years to them, and bands from Widespread Panic to String Cheese Incident are strong headliners in their own right. But the vast majority is still squee-level happy with whatever incarnation brings that amazing sound back to us.Įven more, the scene is stronger than it ever was. Some people are oddly uncomfortable with Mayer taking lead. Some people don't like Donna, some went out to pasture and for personal reasons would rather forego the incredible improvisations and magic that still happen. play incredible music, and that's what it's all about. The Dead, The Other Ones, Further, Phil & Friends, and so on up to today's Dead and Company - to say nothing of DSO, JRAD, JGB, etc. ![]() Some people must have, but in 25+ years of still taking in inordinate amounts of live music, no one seemed to take issue with the decision for the band to carry as different entities, not the Grateful Dead. the music was so central to the community, to the experience, to everything. When Jerry Garcia passed, there were a few million terrified, rudderless people wandering about their lives. I should've had a Snickers before writing this. We should tweet at him and suggest it.ĮDIT: John Deacon, not Roger Deacon. You know who would write a very long and funny essay about this? Chuck Klosterman. On the other hand, Van Halen was still Van Halen with Sammy Hagar, even if they weren’t nearly as good. But when Black Sabbath ditched Ozzy for Ronnie James Dio, they ceased to be “Sabbath” for me, because Ozzy was such a quintessential piece of their identity. Metallica has replaced their bass player three times (RIP Cliff Burton), but nobody doubts they’re still Metallica. A band can sometimes lose one member and still be and sound authentically like themselves, or a new and maybe slightly different version of themselves. I guess this is really a question about authenticity and personal identity. Which is fine, because it was a lifelong dream of mine to see my hero Brian May live. And, more recently, Queen sans John Deacon and with Adam Lambert on vocals was a brilliant show, but it wasn’t a “Queen” experience. I saw Page/Plant in the 90s and it was amazing, but not quite Led Zeppelin. I don’t think I have a really satisfying answer. That’s a great question, and you get my upvote for the thought experiment reference alone (I was a philosophy student and remember the ship of Theseus blowing my mind in Phil 101).
